A few notes on handling your images:

Dust

If you notice a spot on your images that is in a constant place then there is probably dust on your sensor

Use air syringe to get it off- lock mirror up, put back to sky and poof

Your users manual can help you figure out how to lock your mirror up

The more you change lenses the more likely this is to happen

Although many people do not recommend swabbing it yourself it can be done with a little education online

It may cost $500 to have this done professionally

At http://www.photosol.com/ you can get a sensor swab kit with instructions for you camera

Software

There are many many programs that can handle your photos, but Photoshop does it all

Store the original high quality photos somewhere

Be careful with dental software that may compress them

Don’t rotate in windows pic/fax viewer or the images will loose quality

Even Photoshop elements will do everything you need

Storage

           CDs- Bad Idea

If you use them don’t let light get on them

Not even incandescent– they are written with laser and light does same thing -it just takes longer

Use Delkin eFilm  pen- No alcohol pens like sharpie

                      No excess heat or moisture

It’s best not to store anything on CDs, just swapping files and mailing them

DVDs are more stable than CDs

           Hard Drives- Good Idea

Store media on 3-5 hard drives on a rotation cycle

Keep them off-site to avoid theft or fire

Software will allow you to only update new stuff

           Deleting your Card

Always format in camera, instead of delete in computer or you can freeze card

           Use JPEG

512 MB card is plenty- SD or CF

A thought on patient presentation-

PowerPoint

You can show your patient their photos in PowerPoint on their first visit

Open  a new presentation > insert > picture > new photo album

Put their name on the first slide

This file will not compressed or good for large presentations so you could delete  it after

You can also make a composite page- new presentation > slide format > choose 4 squares

Photoshop

In some cases you may want to let your patient watch you work over their teeth in Photoshop

Whiten their teeth, adjust chips, do gingivectomy etc…

Companies can do this for you and send it to you if you prefer

Printing

Get a stack of photo quality paper at Costco and send your patients home with prints of their current condition            as well as what you prepared for them in Photoshop
